Shadows and Motley

That miniscule, gem-precious moment,

When the present isn’t yet history,

When today is not quite yesterday

But not quite turned –

As it must – into tomorrow;

Be Sure

DSC01595 (2)

Be certain-sure that the full

Treasure-moon also rises; that

elven-blued stars wing across autumn skies

In the rich fairy lands; the realms we

May be lucky enough to glimpse

Only behind our eyelids;

Beyond our fragile, tip-toe dreams.

The Eyes of Night.

      What colour would I choose

For the eyes of my night?

That first-time, last-time,

Never-to-be-seen-again time light?

That appears only when the mighty

Winds and powerful wings

Of vacuum-space and eternal time

Throw dust-and-crystal shards

At the limits of my knowledge; those

That are the too-near boundaries

Of my massive ignorance. Lucky to be

One of many sometime-intelligent observers

I am, nonetheless, very alone in this crowd.

Feted, reluctantly, as master of phrase and

Meaning, I am unable find the appropriate word:

My brain too flooded with majestic dark skies

That sparkle, shimmer and shake without sound.

Metamorphosis

comet

On a March-frost night when

A comet nobody has ever seen before

Will change the skies, alter science;

After the horizon wide

Heaven-sunset-bonfire ride:

A little to the left of the moon

And just above the hills

There’s a story nobody’s ever heard

In which a star turns into an urchin.

“Who are you?”

The caterpillar asked … and

Alice made another mistake –

Thinking she was being questioned –

When in fact the creature

Was talking to itselves

(All the ones it had already been,

The final one it was yet to be).

Because maybe what you are

Used to seeing in the mirror

Is not your true form.

There are un-numbered swarms

Of shock-to-the system forms

Behind the familiar mask …

If you but dared to ask the

Carroll-caterpillar question;

Dared to remind your self how wantonly,

Disrespectfully you took so very,

Very much for granted;

Dared to remember

All that you have lost.

Impact Minus Fifteen.

My life is another country;

I am often a stranger there.

She’s not going to jump,

So I won’t even try …

And an asteroid is coming;

Think I’ll stay

On the bar stool.
