The Brightest Apes

January is a time-torn storm,
Roaring vortex doorway of the year;
Watch-storm wizard,
Wind-both-ways blizzard.
The past is new,
The future a fossil;
Flakes of white are
Memories gone and
Those not yet lived.

We stand on the threshold,
Smug, for after all,
We are the brightest apes.
We stamp-dance, fret or weep
Like small children,
Powerless, startled and chilled;
A little a-feared,
Over-faced, overawed and overwhelmed:
The brightest apes,
the most intelligent fools.

Stay Free

Wise white elf,
Gentle wizard of the
Broad snow plains;
Birthed in pale blizzard spring,
Raised on the ice permanent shelf:
Wilderness spirit
Stay free –
For your own sake,
And for mine.

Those That Trust …

Those that trust the

Machines that look for

Patterns and make

Predictions

Forecast snow later today.

Those who use the

Statistics stored in the

Records to point the

Finger of blame

Say it’s all my fault:

That I travelled too far

On holidays;

Kept my family too warm,

Bought food out of season –

Because it was available:

All wrong!

Those who trawl the

Programs, pretending to

make sense of data are

Forecasting blizzards

This evening.

What do they want

Us to do?

Panic?

There’s nothing wrong –

And many things right –

About snow

As far as I’m concerned

We all have

Something we can learn:

If we dare …

If we care …

Beware!
