Such Glib Honey Promises

I threw a lot of pendulum-golden time

At the creature that bodied something like a man,

That wore a crooked mask which made him seem a friend;

That rode my burdened back, stole my very breath

While saying he would shorten distances,

Show me how to make giant trees artistic small, be by

My side when dragons appeared threatening unholy violence,

Dig holes on which to build diamond futures.

They make such glib-honey promises,

These fake-silver-tongued goblins, but,

Feeling no remorse, learn no redeeming lesson …

Get left behind – when god light dawns –

Chewing on ancient curse-dust

And the cracked, dry bones of albatross.

Perhaps he Knows

Free at last from your sanity routines,

On mornings when ankle deep slow-flow tendrils

Of mist ebb and trace the shadow-and-not spaces

Between ghost-of-winter honey bark beeches,

(Making lies of histories and your blind surges of truth)

I swear that I have seen

The dark shield-and-faith lord step out

On caparison’d, prancing dapple stallion

To meet dawn’s damson-moon light;

Though only sheep and bitter ‘daws

Now populate the ruined traces of his castle keep

And dragons be lost, with unicorns, in time’s jealous chains.

Perhaps he knows this, perhaps not;

But still he rides out for his people –

As he always did!

Nike’s Angels.

Steel skeletons,

Scales of carbon grace

These day-bright dragons

Have geology’s patience

As they rest in squat-mode

They preen and purr at

One another, at shadow-clones.

Then, launched by a flash,

They growl orange and white,

Green and monster-black

By the first split-second corner.

In this fierce black-top fandango,

Sitting on the shoulders of every bend

Nike’s endorphin angels

Are urging you on.

Defiant speed and dare-jester balance

Are appropriate respect for tradition’s heroes

And the tomorrow-champions.
