As Tides Always Will

Those years ago,

Our first encounter,

I had only sounds …

Sounds and the pictures

Behind my eyes.

Now tunes return, as

Tides always will

And now I am able to

View the world-as-was.

I cannot help but smile

– So rainbow wide –

At the waters deep,

The bridges long

And all of those

Glorious adventures

In smoke.

Across the Water

Man hangs, happily distracted,

From a dream of smoke.

In another world; his

Friend is at one end

Of a fight-tense line.

Between them a woman whose

Skeleton is a charity-shop stool frame.

Across the smooth water

A thin stick holds up a man.

Me? I’m here; balancing unsteadily

On a reflection that shifts and

Cannot possibly be me

I’m not that colour, I’m not

That rigid, that tired, don’t

Look as old as the water

So faithlessly shows.

She Was

Long-legged captain-mistress

Of all my small, dumb thunders,

The rock and the roll,

Posting forbidden, giddy-passions

Into the purpled neon

And smoke passages.

She stoked the flame-blonde fires

Beneath my intensity desires.

Where is she now?

I still remember waking up

At three in the morning,

Smiling at how the earth shook.

The Smiles

candle1

The smiles were

Always pretty

And she said

“You are the son of a witch,

Brother to a vampire:

It’s no wonder you are crazy!”

The candles were

Soon gone

And she said

“I must have smoke,

I must use gold:

It’s no wonder you are crazy!”

Remaining days were

Travel-filled;

We danced

In a blaze of glory,

Kept the faith.

There’s a marvellous magic

to being crazy!
